Healthcare IT Interoperability News

  • Data Interoperability is the result of careful planning of data architectures, standardized reference terminologies, data harmonization, clinical data standards, and data quality improvement and monitoring. Implementation Guides are used to direct the software development teams on how to build the HL7 messages.

Standardized HL7 messages guide the exchange of data between healthcare providers. However, there is a lot of leeway on exactly how the messages are structured and which version of HL7 is being used. An Implementation Guide, called an IG, specifies the verision od HL7 being used, (Ver2, FHIR, CCDA, etc.), the required data fields to be sent, and the terminologies to be bound to the data fields.

  • THe HL7 international data standards for messages provide a framework for the exchange, integration, sharing, and retrieval of electronic health information. These standards define how information is packaged and communicated from one party to another, setting the language, structure and data types required for seamless integration between systems. HL7 standards support clinical practice and the management and delivery of health services. See Introduction to HL7 Standards
